Cumbria County Council runs the Library and Archive service for Barrow and Furness.

On-line Library Service

Cumbria County Council operate an on-line library service Cumbria Libraries Interactive Catalogue (CLIC) where you can search the Library Catalogue or local societies database.
Libraries Catalogue: If you are a registered user of Cumbria Libraries, you can renew items, check your account and request items online. You'll need your library card number and password.

Getting a Password: Your library number is printed on your library membership card. If you don't already know your password it can be requested in person from your local library. To ensure protection of your personal data the Library Service is only able to take requests for a password in person.

Other Sources

The FreeBMDweb site gives free access to transcribed Civil Registration indexes of births, marriages and deaths for England and Wales.

Local History

The area's main museum is the Dock Museum. An on-line Collections databaseincludes many objects that are stored by the Dock Museum.
Local history enquiries, can sometimes be answered by the Dock Museum i.e. archaeology, industry, social history - not Family History), but the main area records, and therefore best source of information, are held at the Records Office run by Cumbria County Council as below:

Also of use may be the King's Own Royal Regiment Museum in Lancaster, that holds substantial archives relating to the Regiment and to many of the men who served with the King's Own - especially during the First and Second World Wars.

The National Archivesweb site contains records of the UK Government from Domesday to the present.

Vickers Photographic Archive

The Vickers Photographic Archive is hosted on the Dock Museum web site. The images were taken by professional photographers employed by Barrow Shipyard and span a period of almost a century of work at the Yard from the 1870s until the 1960s.

The Archive was originally developed as a marketing tool and was used to illustrate the process and prowess of shipbuilding in Barrow to prospective clients.

It documents the development of shipbuilding, armament and engineering production by one of the world's leading companies in this field and therefore represents a significant asset to British maritime and industrial heritage.

Cumbria Image Bank

Cumbria Image Bankis a collection of digital images created using original material from Cumbria County Council Libraries and Archives Service, as well as images provided by members of the public.
