The follow statement has been issued by the Environment Agency.
The Environment Agency is aware of a substance which has been washed up on the Lancashire and south Cumbria coast line, and are working closely with partners. Tests are being carried out to identify the substance, and partners from the Marine and Coastguard Agency are gathering information on the location and quantity. Over the weekend council teams have been removing the material from the beaches.
Barrow Borough Council would remind dog owners to keep their dogs on leads to alleviate the possibility of animals coming into contact with this substance.
